Social networks and unraveling in labor markets

چکیده

This paper studies the phenomenon of early hiring in entry-level labor markets (e.g. the market for gastroenterology fellowships and the market for judicial clerks) in the presence of social networks. We o¤er a two-stage model in which workers in training institutions reveal information on their own ability over time. In the early stage, workers receive a noisy signal about their own ability. The early information is ‘soft’and non-veri…able, and workers can convey the information credibly only to …rms that are connected to them (potentially via their mentors). At the second stage, ‘hard’ veri…able (and accurate) information is revealed to the workers and can be credibly transmitted to all …rms. We characterize the e¤ects of changes to the network structure on the unraveling of the market towards early hiring. Moreover, we show that an e¢ cient design of the matching procedure can prevent unraveling. (JEL: A14, D85, C78, L14)

Unraveling Peers and Peer Effects: Comments on Goldsmith-Pinkham and Imbens’ “Social Networks and the Identification of Peer Effects”

Understanding peer effects is of first order importance in a range of settings including education, labor markets, crime, voting, and consumer behavior. However, although casual introspection and some field experiments (e.g., Duflo and Saez (2003); Centola (2010)) suggest that the influence of friends and acquaintances on behavior can be substantial, there are formidable challenges in establish...

Backward unraveling over time: The evolution of strategic behavior in the entry level British medical labor markets

This paper studies an evolutionary programming technique, namely a genetic algorithm, to analyze how a population of decision-makers learn to coordinate the selection of an equilibrium or a social convention in a two-sided matching game with incomplete information. In the contexts of centralized and decentralized entry-level labor markets, evolution and adjustment paths of unraveling are explor...

The Dynamics of Reorganization in Matching Markets: a Laboratory Experiment Motivated by a Natural Experiment

We create an environment in which congestion forces agents to match inefficiently early. We then introduce one of two centralized clearinghouse mechanisms. One of these has been successfully used to halt this kind of unraveling in a number of labor markets, while the other has failed. When it is costly for Žrms andworkers to bemismatched comparedwith the costs of matching early, the experimenta...

Constitutions and Social Networks

The objective of the paper is to analyze the formation of social networks where individuals are allowed to engage in several groups at the same time. These group structures are interpreted here as social networks. Each group is supposed to have specific rules or constitutions governing which members may join or leave it. Given these constitutions, we consider a social network to be stable if no...

Emerging small-world referral networks in evolutionary labor markets

|We model a labor market that includes referral networks using an agent based simulation. Agents maximize their employment satisfaction by allocating resources to build friendship networks and to adjust search intensity. We use a local selection evolutionary algorithm, which maintains a diverse population of strategies, to study the adaptive graph topologies resulting from the model. The evolve...
